Theater Review: “The Princess And The Frog” untraditional fairy tale song and dance at PA Shakespeare Festival

“The Princess And The Frog Prince,” in its world debut through Aug. 2, PA Shakespeare Festival at DeSales University, is not your traditional Princess and the Frog fairy tale. It’s neither Disney nor Shrek.

The play, written by PA Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Jason King Jones, is based on The Grimms’ fairy tale.

The July 4 performance was seen for this review.

When the story opens, you meet Princess Sheila (India Profitt), one of seven sister Princesses.

Princess Sheila seems nonconformist, and a fair bit selfish. But as the story unfolds, you see that she feels trapped by her circumstances.

The Frog Prince (Ryan Plunkett) has to follow a set of instructions to be set free. At least this is what he believes. When Princess Sheila finally brings him into the castle, the reception is mixed.

The King (Jamir Fisher), benevolent, but insisting on the keeping of promises, welcomes the Frog. Princess Sandy (Alison Ansorg) is grossed out, and expresses this in a most unmannerly fashion. Still, the King and his servant Henry (Shawn Laub) keep the dinner lively.

The show is interspersed with facts about frogs: They are amphibians, cold-blooded and have sticky tongues for holding food.

The other five Princesses display their individuality well. They come together in song and dance. And there is plenty of lively song and dance. When the Princess finally kisses the frog - Spoiler Alert!- nothing happens. In the aftermath, another action changes the Frog to a Prince.

Hilarity ensues when Henry, who first served the Prince, is delighted by his return. The discovery of a Witch in the castle adds drama.

In the end, Princess Sheila is allowed to pursue her dreams, with a little help from her friend the Prince.

The cast includes Maya Jean Marino Cappello (Scarlet), Ian Higgins (Mr. Sniffles), Isabella Stevens (Sioban) and Sophia Twohig (Sky).

The show is directed by Jessica Bedford. The composer is Pax Ressler. Assistant Director-Choreographer is Bella Lucano.

Scenic Designer is Marie Laster. Lighting Designer is Finnegan Gavelli. Costume Designer is Amy Best. Puppet Designer is Angel D’Andria.

The show’s run time is 50 minutes, which is perfect for children.

Children can get a front row seat to the performance with onstage carpet seating.

Attendees can meet the characters after performances for autographs and photos.
