Keeping cool at Memorial Pool
Sara Collins, the board president of Bethlehem Aquatic Club and a coach of The Bethlehem Tides, welcomed everyone to the installation of a new shade structure at Memorial Pool June 30. “Thank you all for being here as we celebrate not just a new addition to our city pool,” she said, “but the kind of partnership that makes our community stronger, healthier, and more connected.”
Collins also shared the progression of the Bethlehem Tide team and the strides they are making, such as growing from 94 swimmers to 120 in a year. She recognized State Sen. Lisa Boscola for making the structure possible and being an advocate for parks and pool systems.
Kurt Derr, representing Sen. Boscola’s office, spoke on her behalf. He talked about the importance of the pools and the skills, relationships, and connections they bring. He presented a certificate recognizing the Bethlehem Aquatic Club’s “dedication and support, and commitment to the community of Bethlehem.”
Mayor William Reynolds also addressed the crowd. He reflected on his own connection with Memorial Pool, recalling how he grew up swimming there and how the tradition continues as he now brings his wife and son to enjoy the same space as a family. “One thing about the city is we’re about creating opportunities for people, and being grateful for the opportunities we have,” he said. He spoke about the value of friendship, the power of teamwork, and the opportunities that community spaces like Memorial Pool provide.
