NHS football team already has high hopes
The calendar has just turned to July, yet expectations are already streaming for the Northampton football team,
The Konkrete Kids recently finished their spring workouts with a seven-on-seven passing drill against Allentown Central Catholic, Notre Dame of Green Pond, and Wilkes-Barre.
As they begin their summer workouts, the Kids are hungry to reverse the fate of their second half of the season that saw them drop three of their final games, and a 38-15 loss to Freedom in a District 11 Class 6A quarterfinal game, on top of that.
Northampton finished their season with an overall 6-6 record.
“Everyone is excited coming out of spring ball,” beamed Kids’ head coach John Toman, who will begin his fifth season at the helm. “We will be senior-led with a lot of experience.”
Senior quarterback Gavin Taff will back for his third season. Taff completed 113 of 203 passes for 1,302 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions last season. Fellow senior Zeke Spencer, who ran for 378 yards a year ago, is back in the backfield.
Others in the backfield in the early projections will be Zander Rickert, Owen Stanchock, Sincere Wadlington, and Keegan Hackett.
Cam Hersch and Joey High return at receiver.
Defensively, Wadlington, Chase Corrow and Eli Weidner are back on the line.
Stanchock, who was their leading tackler last season, leads the linebackers along with Keegan Hackett, Rocco Amato, Chase Czarnecki, and Kevin Nunez.
The secondary should be strong with High, Rickert, Spencer, and Noah Kline.
From the above mentioned players, Czarnecki is the lone junior.
Toman certainly welcomes the overall experience.
“We have no real newcomers,” boasted Toman. “We have a lot of seniors back, and they are ready to get started.”
Toman also highlighted some juniors, safety Robert Wambold, wide receiver Jeremiah Strowder, and linemen Andrew Bastian and Sam Constant, all of whom should be in the mix.
The Kids get things started with a scrimmage against Upper Perkiomen Aug. 16, and begin the regular season with Pennsbury Aug. 22.
Toman noted that Derek Bleiler will take over as defensive coordinator, a position he held under Toman at Southern Lehigh for 11 of Toman’s 14 years as head coach there. Chuck Sonon, a former Bethlehem Catholic head coach, will just coach the offensive line this season after coaching both lines.
