Man riding electric bicycle killed in Upper Macungie Twp crash

A 76-year-old Upper Macungie Township man was killed when the pedal-assist electric bicycle he was operating collided with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 52-year-old Northampton man around 11:15 a.m. July 4 in the vicinity of Schantz and Cetronia roads, Upper Macungie Township.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio, Thomas C. Hess, was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m. the same day at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

Buglio said the cause of Hess’ death was due to multiple blunt force trauma due to the collision.

He ruled the manner of his death an accident.

In addition to the coroner’s office, the Upper Macungie Township Police Department is investigating this crash.

According to Upper Macungie Township police, offices responded to the scene for a motor vehicle crash involving the car and the bicycle.

Police say both the car and bicycle were traveling south on Cetronia Road approaching Schantz Road when the two came into contact with each other.

Hess, who was wearing a helmet sustained serious injuries as a result and was taken to the hospital where he was later declared deceased, police say.

The Northampton man, who was wearing his seatbelt was not injured.

Both the car and the bicycle sustained minor damage, police say.

Upper Macungie Township Bureau of Fire and Cetronia Ambulance Corps assisted at the scene.

According to police, this collision is under investigation by the Upper Macungie Township Police Department along with the Lehigh County Crash Reconstruction Task Force.
