Bethlehem’s night sky dazzles over the Lehigh River July 4 as thousands of spectators celebrated the nation’s 249th birthday watching the pyrotechnics launched from Sand Island. Smoke and colorful bursts gave the appearance of cosmic nebulae from deeper in the universe. And, relics of Bethlehem Steel’s blast furnace heyday were prominently silhouetted against many of the higher bursts, a reminder of the fire that once filled their bellies.PRESS PHOTOS BY DANA GRUBB
