Council approves property reassessments
At the Hanover Township – Lehigh County Council meeting, council voted to approve four Allentown property reassessments at 881 Marcon Boulevard; 2202 N. Irving Street; 861 Marcon Boulevard; and 894 Marcon Boulevard. The reassessments lowered the properties owners local and school property taxes.
Township solicitor Jason Ulrich, Esq. noted the reductions of township taxes will be minimal because the township has a low property tax rate. The school district, Ulrich explained, will experience a larger tax loss because of their substantially higher property tax rate assessed on the affected properties whose tax burden was reduced.
In her brief manager’s report, township manager Melissa Wehr said the first “Movies in the Park” was postponed due to inclement weather. Wehr noted the planned movie, “Shark Tail” is scheduled for viewing July 10, Thursday at Chestnut Grove Park, 2202 Grove Road, Allentown, PA 18109. Admission is free and the movie begins at dusk.
In his township engineer report, Kevin Chimics, P.E. reported the Lloyd Street overlay project may begin in late July or August. He added the contractor may request overnight work during the project. The contractor plans a traffic pattern evaluation to establish if there is a need to work overnight. And if the overnight plan is developed, the contractor will then approach council to approve any work overnight plan.
Liz Rosencrans, D&L Trail Director of Trails & Conservation, provided an update on an amendment of the D&L Trail. Two plans one Allentown’s and the second is Hanleco’s plan were amalgamated into one plan by the PA Department Environmental Protection. A concern in the amendment is stormwater management.
Rosencrans said the amendment will delay the completion of the project for about one year. The cost of the project is grant funded including funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Council approved the amendment. There is no cost to the township.
Council approved the township Bills for July 2, 2025 in the amount of $136,676.
