Yard waste facility available for residents

Alburtis Borough Council met June 11 where council members unanimously approved the meeting minutes and authorized the payment of outstanding borough bills, with the bills totaling $120,723.28, dating back to the previous meeting date.

Mayor Kathleen Palmer delivered her report, first, highlighting the work the maintenance team has done. Second, she said Alburtis Elementary School has been officially established as an emergency shelter with the East Penn School District. Lastly, she announced Emmaus has agreed to allow Alburtis residents to use the yard waste facility for $50 per year. Residents must go to Emmaus Borough Hall, 420 S. 10th St., Emmaus, to get a pass.

The police report was presented, noting a drop in incidents from 92 in April to 81 in May.

The Macungie Ambulance Corps followed with a report on emergency medical services, showcasing seven calls to the Borough of Alburtis throughout May.

The treasurer’s report outlined the borough’s current financial standing, which remains stable.

The borough engineer’s report provided an update on several ongoing projects, including the sewer rehabilitation project and the smoke testing program for sewer lateral cap replacements. The smoke testing went well, with fewer issues than expected.

Under new business, council approved a $22,200 payment to Insituform Technologies, Inc. for sanitary lateral lining work completed. Council also awarded a bid for the construction of a pressure-reducing vault, a key component in the borough’s water system.

An update was provided on the borough’s sidewalk improvement efforts. Councilman Hector Moss asked about adding a sidewalk by the community center. He asked Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth to look for grants available to fund a project. Moss said he doesn’t want to see residents have to walk into the street when they are walking their dogs or with their family. Nemeth said he will investigate and council provided approval.

The last item on the agenda was a note about Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Incident Management System training courses. These sessions will be completed by borough personnel to ensure compliance with federal emergency response protocols and improve local readiness.

There was an item added to the agenda at the end of the meeting to include an extra road to mill and pave in the borough. It will be an area from Fort Sumpter Road that turns into Fifth Street. Council approved investigating the cost of the work. If it is too expensive, they may include it in next year’s budget.

With all agenda items addressed and approved, the meeting was adjourned.

An executive session was held 6:45 p.m. to discuss legal matters.
