It’s funny how a simple item triggers a flood of memories. When I started cleaning out my mother’s house, I brought Lydia and Caroline over to see what they wanted to keep. We opened the linen closet door and they both immediately dove for two matching blankets. They were the cotton blankets from about 25 years ago with various designs or, in this case, cats woven into them. I had planned to take them to Goodwill but hadn’t gotten around to it. They were the blankets my mother had gotten for the twin beds in the room where the girls stayed when they went to visit Grandma. Lydia and Caroline remembered.

The copy deadline for the Aug. 6 column will be July 31.
