Connie Mack team still playing well
Northampton head Connie Mack coach Mike Biechy recently discovered what a difference 10 days can make.
Due to weather cancellations, his team didn’t play for a 10-day stretch, and their last game being a 3-0 loss to South Parkland back on June 13.
When the Konkrete Kids took the field June 23, Biechy didn’t quite know what to expect. Fortunately, the Kids responded with a 10-4 victory over Nazareth, and they raised their record to 8-2 overall and sit at 9-2 as of last week.
In the Nazareth victory, Chase Werkheiser went three-for-four with two RBIs, and Ben Swain allowed two runs (one earned) and two hits with six strikeouts and six walks over four innings. Aidan Sergent and Nate Kovach closed out the victory over the final three innings.
The Kids broke open a tight game with a four-run, top of the seventh in which Werkheiser had a two-run single. Kovach and Shiloh Dritt each drove in a run.
Despite the layoff, Biechy had a good feeling about his club.
“I would not say that I was surprised,” said Biechy. “I think we played to our potential against a good Nazareth team. Fortunately, we were able to take on some run in the seventh that gave us a nice cushion. Swain pitched well giving us four innings and only giving up two hits. Sergent and Kovach came in and held things down. Chase Werkheiser had a great night at the plate.
“I thought we would get back to swinging the bats well after they went cold the last game at South. Parkland. Hopefully the week off with the weather will do us some good down the stretch.”
Biechy has been impressed with his pitching staff, and the Kids’ offense is hitting .395 as a team.
Swain is 2-0 with a 6.36 ERA and a team-high 16 strikeouts, and Sergent is 1-0 with a 0.58 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Tyler Biechy is 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA.
Kovach is hitting .542 with 13 RBIs; Dritt, 429; Werkheiser, .417; Biechy, .400; Ty Rutzmoyer, .524; Logan Rusnock, .483, 11 RBIs, and a team-high 14 hits; and Zach Hartzell, .419.
With consistent pitching and hitting, Biechy had made a smooth swing into his first year as the Connie Mack head coach and likes the direction of his team. The Kids had a challenging rest of the week ahead with Emmaus Wednesday, Southern Lehigh Thursday, Wilson Friday, and Moore Township Saturday.
“We’re really deep with pitching and continue to throw well as a staff,” stated Biechy. “The innings have been spread out pretty evenly.
“The transition for me has been smooth. I think everything has been as expected. The kids are great, we’re just as talented as the other top teams in the league. We just need to believe in ourselves and put it all together.”
The team would beat Wilson 13-0. Chase Bodnar had 5 RBIs in the win while Werkheiser, Hartzell and Matt Buskirk each had two. Hartzell had two hits. Zane Lynch got the win going five innings and allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts.
