Bolmer continues to develop for Catty
During the baseball season, Alex Bolmer arguably was Catasauqua’s most consistent pitcher. It wasn’t about wins and losses, as Bolmer had two of the team’s three wins in a 16-loss season.
Instead, it was about Bolmer continuing to develop his game as a sophomore. That development has continued this summer with the Catasauqua Connie Mack team.
Even though he has a 1-3 record with a 5.52 ERA through the team’s first 11 games, first-year head coach Kyle Martell remains optimistic that Bolmer will finish the season on a high note. Martell has watched Bolmer’s development through the years.
“Alex is certainly one of the better and more consistent pitchers I’ve seen in a while,” beamed Martell. “I’ve been around him since CYAA days early on in Biddy. I saw every game varsity played this past season and every game the prior year when he pitched for JV.
“His fastball isn’t overpowering, but he hits his spots, mix that with his curve and changeup, and he keeps kids off balance and well. He almost makes hitters concentrate on his off speed stuff and then has the ability to sneak his fastball right by them. He has matured quite a bit, when things don’t go his way he’s able to gather himself and reset.”
Martell has seen Bolmer mature on and off the field.
“A couple of years ago when he was with us playing Knee-Hi in the LVBL he would lose his composure when he wasn’t hitting his spots or kids were knocking him around a bit,” added Martell. “He’s learned to put things behind him. He’s a good kid and fun to be around.”
Bolmer has added to his repertoire, and he believes he and his team can turn the season around.
“I am throwing something new this Connie Mac season, the pitch I’ve added back to my pitch arsenal is the changeup,” said Bolmer. “I pitched it before, but the past two years I have looked away from it. The changeup helped me throughout the year more than I even thought it would.
“As this season goes on, I think we will certainly get to that .500 mark and possibly over it if we play are best baseball.”
As of this past weekend because of early Press deadlines, Catty is at 5-6 overall and trying to earn a playoff spot.
