Coplay: Recreation, welfare group turns 70

A grateful Coplay Borough community extends a happy birthday wish to Coplay Recreation and Welfare Organization on its 70th birthday this July. Hundreds of volunteers have assisted the group achieve their goals over the past seven decades.

The Wednesday night summer series at the Stephen J. Burker Memorial Gazebo, North Second and Chestnut streets, continues with Rock Steady July 9 and Tim Harakal July 23.

The concerts are held 6-9 p.m.

Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., is planning its summer concert series. The lineup for Friday night concerts includes Honey Buzzards July 11 and Mere Mortals July 18.

The gates open 5 p.m., and the kitchen opens 5:30 p.m. Bands will play until 10 p.m.

The Wednesday acoustic concerts are 6-9 p.m. The schedule includes Mere Mortals July 16 and Honey and Nutz July 30. The kitchen will be open.

Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission is sponsoring the fifth annual Heart of an Angel Fight Against Colon Cancer 5-K run and 1-mile walk fun run, set for 8 a.m. July 12 at Saylor Park, Second and Keefer streets.

Coplay Garden Club will meet 7 p.m. July 24 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St. The group meets the last Thursday of the month.

Coplay’s pool is open noon-7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Season passes are available at the borough office, 98 S. Fourth St.

Check out the concession stand for tasty food and refreshments.

The Aqua Zumba classes are 5:45-6:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Public works Director Paul Boyle announced brush/branch pickup will continue through Sept. 26.

Call the borough office at 610-262-6088 to schedule pickups for sofas, mattresses (plastic encased), chairs, dressers or other large items. There is a limit of two per year at no charge.

The Coplay Scholarship Fund Committee is awarding two $5,000 scholarships to Coplay residents who graduated from high school and are planning further education at a university, college, technical school or the police academy.

Scholarships are awarded annually, and the application process is underway. Email billleiner@aol.com for an application.

Coplay Food Bank, located in the lower level of the municipal building, is open 8:30-10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month.

If unable to attend the scheduled Tuesday morning time frame, call Jodi at 610-262-0928 to make other arrangements.

The food bank needs coffee, spaghetti sauce and noodles, canned pasta, rice pouches and non-sweetened dry cereals. Monetary donations are always accepted.

Hometown Hero banners applications are available at the borough office. Publicly honor your war heroes and first responders — police officers, firefighters, and ambulance personnel — with a banner.
