‘Meaningful day for our students’

A steady rain did not postpone the groundbreaking for the new Fountain Hill Elementary School. BASD showed its ingenuity and held the event under a large tent structure. The Broughgal MS orchestra performed under the direction of Band Director Adam Stoltz. Families, staff and students had ample seating.

Speeches were made by Principal Courtney Stambaugh, School Board President Mike Faccinetto, Superintendent Dr. Jack Silva, Fountain Hill Mayor Mike Johnson, and his wife, Fountain Hill Recreation Director Jamie Johnson, and State Representative Steve Samuelson. Students from Fountain Hill gave brief statements. State Representative Jeanne McNeill attended. State Senator Lisa Boscola sent a representative, as did State Senator Nick Miller.

Members of the BASD staff attended including Assistant Superintendent Maureen Leeson, Director of Pupil Service Claire Hogan, and Communications Coordinator Barbara Clymer, as well as BASD school board members. Members of Alloy 5, the design team for the new school, and CHA Contstruction also attended.

“What a joyful and meaningful day for our students, staff and families, educators and Fountain Hill community,” Dr. Silva said. “This ceremony has a special meaning for me, as I attended Fountain Hill Elementary. But as someone who grew up in Fountain Hill and walked to this school every morning, we are building a future worthy of our children’s potential. A place where memories begin. We, as a district, are committed to making this process as respectful and transparent as possible.”

Fountain Hill Recreation Director Jaime Johnson also attended Fountain Hill Elementary School. “I didn’t make any notes, mostly because I have these feelings,” Johnson said. “I attended this school, played on the playground. I’ve watched generations learn and grow here. We are a tiny little borough, but we are strong and mighty. There are great things that have come out of this borough and elementary school, and those will continue.”

Johnson ‘s husband, Fountain Hill Mayor Mike Johnson, said, “The new Fountain Hill Elementary School will grow the roots of success.”

Fountain Hill student Jessie said, “I’m in the first grade, and I’m excited about the new school. I hope it has good feelings.”

Principal Courtney Stambaugh thanked teachers and staff for the care and commitment you they bring.

“It is the gentle rhythm that keeps our school thriving,” she said. “To our families, thank you for entrusting us with your greatest treasure.”

The groundbreaking was ceremonial. A long pile of sand stretched the short end of the tent. Several rounds of shoveling commenced. This allowed staff, administrators, construction workers and other officiants a chance to “break ground” for the new school.
