School board approves summer projects

Although most classes have ended for the summer in Parkland schools, several district sites will be active with major capital projects.

At the June 17 meeting, the board approved a bid of $556,000 from Barker and Barker Paving to prepare for construction at the high school.

Arthur Oakes, director of facilities and operations, recommended at a committee meeting preliminary work can be done now before the high school renovation and addition begins in March 2026.

Oakes explained the project will include fire hydrant water line relocation, wastewater line relocation removal of underground fuel tanks, relocation of natural gas lines and removal of some on site lighting.

Turning to Kernsville Elementary School, the board approved a bid of $516,375 from Nyce Construction Services for improvements to the drainage system on the property.

Oakes noted the project will direct stormwater runoff away from the building to a retention pond.

Moving on to Fogelsville Elementary School, the board approved a bid of $160,280 from Billitier Electric for improvements at the bus loop.

The bid came in lower than expected.

Oakes said Billitier is familiar with the job site and bid aggressively to district lighting specifications.

The job should be completed during the summer.

On a different matter, the board approved cafeteria prices for the 2025-2026 school term.

The cost for students remains the same as the previous year – $2.70 for elementary lunch and $2.95 for secondary lunch.

Breakfast is free for all students.

Adults will pay $3 for breakfast and $4.45 for lunch.
