A look back: Wrestling scholar athlete winners and nominees
Editor’s note: It’s been a busy high school sports season, and sometimes things get pushed aside due to space issues or other instances. So, over the summer months, we’ll take a delayed look back. This week, its wrestling scholar athletes.
Bethlehem Catholic’s Shane McFillin capped off his senior wrestling season with another award, taking home one of the District 11 Wrestling Coaches Association’s Scholar-Athlete awards at a banquet at Steel Club in Hellertown earlier this year.
Saucon Valley’s Cole Hubert and Easton’s Aubre Krazer were also scholar-athlete recipients.
Catasauqua’s Braden Bartholomew was among the nominees.
District 11 also announced their Hall of Fame inductees this year and Bethlehem was well represented with the likes of Liberty’s Rich Cabrera and Bethlehem Catholic’s Randy Cruz Sr. and Randy Cruz Jr.
Cabrera, served as the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic tournament director for 20 years, coached the Little Hurricane youth program and was a Liberty assistant coach for 20 years.
Randy Cruz Sr. was an assistant coach for the Hawks under former head coach Jeff Karam and helped build the program to a state and national power. He also was Weaver Elite Wrestling club director for more than a decade.
Randy Cruz Jr. was a PIAA champion and two-time state runner-up at Bethlehem Catholic. He was also an NCAA All-American at Lehigh.
The two other inductees included Parkland’s Ethan Lizak and Tri-Valley’s Steve Scheib.
Lizak won two state titles for the Trojans, was a four-time PIAA medalist, won three district championships and four Northeast Regional crowns.
He was a three-time All-American at Minnesota and NCAA runner-up in 2017.
Scheib was Tri-Valley’s first state champion in 2004.
