PHS pulls out pair of late-game playoff wins

The Parkland baseball team played its way to a second championship game in the past two weeks.

After beating Liberty in the East Penn Conference title on May 17, the Trojans earned the top seed for the District 11 playoffs and dispatched their first two opponents to earn a rematch with the Hurricanes in the district championship game.

After some weather delays, Parkland opened the district tournament with a 3-2 win over No. 8 seed Easton last Saturday.

Easton scored runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.

Parkland tied the game in the fifth on Connor Gerhart’s two-run single that scored Tsubasa Magota and Julian Santiago.

Gerhart scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after walking and advancing to third on Brady Derr’s single. The Rovers intentionally walked Will Dobil to load the bases and Ben Weninger made them pay for the decision when he lined a single to center field to score Gerhart.

Dobil went 2-for-2 and walked twice in the win as Parkland had five hits in the game but also drew seven walks.

Nathan Unger allowed five hits and one earned run over 3 2/3 innings for the Trojans. Sawyer Marsteller got the win, allowing three hits and no runs over 3 1/3 innings.

The Trojans came from behind again in Sunday’s semifinals when they beat Nazareth 3-2 to advance to the title game, which was scheduled for Wednesday evening.

The No. 4 seed Blue Eagles scored in the top of the first inning before the Trojans answered in their half of the inning with a Weninger double that scored Dobil, who had drawn a two-out walk and stole second base.

After Nazareth went ahead 2-1 in the fifth inning, Parkland answered with a run in each of the next two innings to seal the win.

A single from Unger in the sixth scored Evan Newhard to tie the game at 2-2.

Dobil doubled to start the seventh and eventually scored from third base on an error with two outs.

Brody Morabito went 2-for-3 while walking once and driving in a run against the Eagles. Unger was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
