Look out for the Trojans.
With players from Parkland High School’s team that won league and district titles and reached the state playoffs, South Parkland rolled directly from the PIAA tournament into the Lehigh Valley Legion season and showed no signs of hangover.
The Trojans combine good pitching and solid offense and are the only remaining undefeated team in the league.
After picking up a pair of shutout wins to open the LVL season, the offense kicked in and put up 22 runs in two games against Whitehall-Coplay. The end result is that South Parkland has outscored their opponents 29-6 to start the year 4-0.
Carter Delong and Carter Wanamaker combined to shutout Northern Valley in the season opener with a 6-0 win as the two pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter. The Chargers did work five walks in the game but were unable to convert them into any runs.
At the plate, Connor Gerhart and Ben Weninger both drove in two runs and six different players scored a run for the Trojans.
In a 1-0 rivalry game against North Parkland, the South won the battle. This time, it was Mack Parsell and Andrew Bowser combining on a three-hit shutout to get the win. South Parkland collected just three singles in the game with Jack Streeter driving in Jaxon Kramer in the top of the seventh with what would be the winning run.
The SP offense came to play in two games against Whitehall-Coplay and scored 22 combined runs on 19 hits.
The Trojans have three players with 10 or more plate appearances who are batting .300 or better. Andrew Klotz leads the team with a .455 average, followed by Will Dobil (.417) and Sawyer Marsteller (.300). Weninger has the team’s only home run and is tied for the team lead in RBI with Klotz, Dobil, and Gerhart, who all have driven in four runs this season. Dobil also leads the team with five runs scored.
With the two opening shut outs, Bowser, Delong, Parsell and Wanamaker all have 0.00 ERAs, as does Nicholas Bowser, who has two shutout innings of relief this season. Weninger has a 1.75 ERA and Marsteller has a 2.80 ERA.
As a team, the Trojans are batting .279 with a staff ERA of 1.50.
South Parkland has games against Northern Valley and Lower Macungie coming up before facing North Parkland in a doubleheader to open next week.
