LM Legion team slows down after hot start
The Legion baseball season has gotten off to a tough start for Lower Macungie.
The team opened the season with a 2-5 mark. After winning its season opener, a three-game losing streak was waiting around the corner. A win against Whitehall-Coplay got the Mustangs back on the right path, but they struggled in their last two games.
While the team has a combined .206 batting average, the pitching keeps it in most games.
Lower Macungie has a 2.85 ERA, and its staff has 44 strikeouts in 46 innings.
Connor Horwath has a team low ERA of 1.57 and opponents are batting just .196 against him in one start and two relief appearances. In his 13 1/3 innings, Horwath has struck out 15 batters. Ryan Hummell and Nicolas Balsamo also have their ERA under the two mark with Hummel at 1.75 and Balsamo posting a 1.91 ERA in the early going. Jack Sparango has a 2.43 ERA and Cole Geiger (1 IP) and Owen Haas (2 IP) have yet to allow an earned run.
Hummell has also provided much of the offense with a .353 average and six runs scored in the seven games he has played. Dayne Schmidt and Geiger are both hitting .313 with Geiger being tied for second on the team with Aaron Fleetwood for runs scored with four.
Of the 35 hits for the team this season, just three have been for extra bases.
Weather and field conditions permitting, Lower Macungie will host Southern Lehigh Thursday at Church Lane Field and then host South Parkland on Friday. The Trojans are the only remaining undefeated team with a 4-0 record so far. Next week has road games at Whitehall-Coplay and Northern Valley to open the week.
