Fogel, Spisszak will continue baseball careers

Two members of the Salisbury baseball team recently signed letters of intent to attend colleges where they will also continue their athletic careers.

Owen Fogel and Austin Spisszak were honored at a signing ceremony held in the Salisbury High School gymnasium last month.

Fogel will attend Misericordia University in the fall and will major in business finance. In his role as a caddy at Lehigh Country Club, Fogel often spoke with members of the club about potential career decisions, which helped lead him to business finance.

“A lot of the members are business finance kind of guys,” he said. “And we would talk and they really communicated with me about what they do, and I really enjoyed it.”

In his varsity career at Salisbury, Fogel hit .257 with three career home runs, 33 RBI, and 25 runs scored. He also spent time on the mound and finished with a 3.40 ERA in 29 games as both a starter and reliever.

“What I’m going to remember is the team in general and all of the good times we had,” said Fogel. “Playing in the district championship last year and the district semifinals last year are both definitely up there in my favorite memories. I had a good time pitching this season, as well. Overall, though, it’s just being a part of that team.”

Spisszak is heading to Ursinus College to major in biology.

“I really liked the campus, and the school is really good, and their biology program is excellent,” said Spisszak. “Then, in baseball, I really liked the coaches and the fields, and it’s a good program.”

The idea of majoring in biology is carrying on somewhat of a family tradition.

“A lot of my family members do it, so I just decided to carry on that way and decided that was what I wanted to do,” said Spisszak.

In three seasons with the varsity team, Spisszak played in 61 games and hit .340 with 34 RBI and 37 runs scored. Like Fogel, Spisszak played a sizable role as a pitcher, pitching in 29 games and posting a career .229 ERA for Salisbury, with 105 strikeouts in 116 innings of work.

“We always had a team that played together at Salisbury, and I think that’s what made it so special,” said Spisszak. “There’s nothing better than to be on a team like that where there is a fun attitude and you’re all looking to pick each other up.”

Fogel and Spisszak were both members of teams that twice played in the Colonial League tournament, including reaching the semifinals in their junior year. That same season, Salisbury took home silver medals in districts, falling to Saucon Valley in the finals. That semifinal game included Salisbury’s Jake Zellin hitting a grand slam to beat Allentown Central Catholic, something that both players mentioned as a highlight game in their high school careers.

“That was just electric,” said Spisszak of the memory. “We all kind of came together after that home run and we all went out to Chipotle to celebrate after the game, and I don’t think I will ever forget that.”
