LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Eight seniors helped SHS reach playoffs

The 2025 season opened with a strong stretch of games for the Salisbury Falcons before the team rode some ups and downs in the middle of the season. Unfortunately for the Falcons, from there things unraveled somewhat and the team hobbled into the postseason.

The team’s roster carried eight seniors and three juniors at the beginning of the season.

A number of those players were coming off a basketball season where the team finished the regular season 14-8 but lost in the first game of both the Colonial League and District 11 tournaments. The players took out some of their frustrations on their early opponents and started baseball season 7-1.

With a tough middle part of the schedule, Salisbury was treading water with a win followed by a loss and a 3-3 stretch dropped the Falcons to 10-4.

The final stretch of the season opened with a doubleheader loss to Saucon Valley, where the Panthers got a shutout from starter Cole Hubert and then won an 11-7 slugfest. The losses sent Salisbury into a 1-4 finish to the season that left the team struggling as the Colonial League playoffs got underway.

The Falcons were seeded fifth in the league playoffs and were matched up against Palmerton in the opening round of the league tournament.

Salisbury opened quickly with a 3-1 lead and then stretched it to 4-1 only to see the Blue Bombers put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then hang on for a 6-5 win.

In districts, Salisbury was the three seed to give them a home game against Pen Argyl to open the tournament. The Falcons had shutout the Knights 7-0 in the season opener but the battle in districts took a different turn and Salisbury fell behind early and were unable to battle back, ending their season with an 8-0 loss.

One of the issues that plagued Salisbury this season was faulty defense.

The team committed 60 errors during the season that led to 61 unearned runs for their pitching staff. In the two playoff games, Salisbury made 10 errors, allowing six unearned runs.

As a group, the seniors hit .322 with Owen Fogel’s two home runs counting for the only long balls of the season. The senior class also drove in 76 runs and scored 84 runs for Salisbury.

Austin Spisszak led the senior class with a .364 average and Caleb Gonzalez batted .357 on the season. Michael Stauffer was the leader with 21 RBI among Salisbury seniors.

Among underclassmen, junior Nate Nunez hit .338 and classmate Dom Gracia hit .296. From the sophomore class, Garrett Leiner hit .300 for Salisbury.

The pitching staff will take a hit as well with the loss of Fogel and Spisszak. The two seniors started 17 of the 21 games this season. Fogel made eight starts and five relief appearances with a 1.95 ERA while Spisszak made nine starts and came on in relief in three games to post a 3.22 ERA.

Junior Josiah Kuhns made three starts and six relief appearances with an ERA of 2.26 for Salisbury and figures to be a key component of the staff in 2026.
