EHS softball falls in D-11 playoff game

The Emmaus High School softball team had a lot going for it heading into the District 11 6A quarterfinals against Northampton this past weekend.

The third-seeded Hornets entered the game a 10-0 record at home this season. The sixth-seeded Kids had also lost four of their last five games and were on a skid.

The teams began play last Friday afternoon, but rain halted action after one inning and they resumed Saturday morning.

After seven innings the teams were tied 2-2. Northampton scored twice in the top of the eighth inning and then shut out Emmaus in the bottom half to take the game.

The Hornets (18-5 overall) had their lowest scoring output of the season as the Kids (14-8) moved on to the semifinal round to take on the second seed, Nazareth. Emmaus was looking for its first district title since 2007 and now the 18-year drought will have to wait another season.

Northampton third baseman Ro Echevarria recorded the big hit in extras as she delivered a two-run single with one out in the top of the eighth to break the 2-2 draw.

The Kids scored first with a run in the top of the third inning, but Hornets starting pitcher Mari Eiswerth got her team on the scoreboard with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Northampton once again took the lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but just as they did earlier Emmaus responded and tied the game up once again thanks to an RBI double by Abby Derr.

Derr was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate and Sadie Haefeli went 2-for-2. Eiswerth had an RBI at the plate and threw all eight innings, finishing with a record of 15-5 inside the circle.
