East Allen OKs fire department program

At the May 22 East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the board approved a payment from the East Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department Recruitment and Retention Program in the amount of $7,584, according to township Secretary Angela Henry, reached after the meeting.

A glitch with the meeting’s recording and video system precluded the meeting from being recorded, she also explained.

The board established the recruiting and retention program in conjunction with the input of the volunteer fire department. The effort began more than a year ago as the township experienced reported difficulty keeping firefighters on their service roster.

Earlier this year, East Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department held two town hall meetings to have a public presentation and conversation with residents about the difficult situation its fire personnel find themselves.

The recruitment and retention program is designed to reward firefighters with financial rewards for joining and remaining with the department.

The board had a discussion on the Uniform Construction Code Board of Appeals and a possible replacement of a new board is being considered. It was a discussion only and no decisions were made.

A board discussion of grant applications occurred that covered recreation grants for township parks and new playground equipment. It was reported a grant from the Monroe County Share Account in the amount of $292,283 was awarded to the township to renovate the historical Dech House.

A recommendation to hire a certified public accountant was tabled by the supervisors.

Supervisors held a discussion on hiring a contractor to scan and organize all township records. The issue was tabled to allow township Manager Brent Green to research the matter further.
