COLLEGE NEWS: Commonwealth University (Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses) congratulates the 2,300 students who were named to the spring 2025 dean’s list.

Among those named include Hailey George, of New Tripoli; Taylor Greenawalt, of Kutztown; Danielle Leto, of Kutztown, Abigail Rabert, of Kempton; Paige Sevrain, of New Tripoli; Emma Troutman, of Kutztown; Jakayla Holmes, of Germansville; Mitchell Miller, of Kempton; and Rylan Ebner, of Kutztown.

To qualify for the dean’s list, the student must have earned a GPA of at least 3.50, on a 4.0 scale, in 12 or more semester hours of letter grades.

Commonwealth University congratulates the more than 800 students who were named to the spring 2025 president’s list.

Among those named include Jamie Decker, of Breinigsville; Alina Taddei, of Schnecksville; and Luke Willard, of Orefield.

To qualify for the president’s list, the student must have earned a GPA of 4.0 in 12 or more semester hours of letter grades.

BETHELFEST: 5 to 9 p.m. June 27 at New Bethel Church, 135 New Bethel Church Road, Kempton. Our fifth year Bethelfest will feature bluegrass, gospel and folkloric music by Dave Kline and musical guests. Free admission. Food and drinks for sale. Bring a lawn chair. If rain, it will be in the sanctuary. All proceeds benefit the church’s local mission.

FRESHWATER SNORKELING: Discover the fascinating ecosystem that lies below the Lehigh River at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s What’s in the Water? Freshwater Snorkeling in the Lehigh River event 6-8 p.m. July 1. During this special program with LGNC and Berks Nature, participants will have the opportunity to wade and snorkel in the shallows of the river. There is a fee per person for members and nonmembers.

GRANT WRITER: The Sanctuary at Haafsville, a private nonprofit dog and cat rescue organization in Breinigsville, is seeking a volunteer grant writer that will oversee the grant application process from gathering all relevant information, writing proposals, and submitting applications that reflect the purpose, importance, and impact of The Sanctuary’s programs. HAWK MOUNTAIN: June 28 and June 29; Celebrate and show off your pride at Hawk Mountain. All visitors that wear rainbow apparel or accessories will receive half off their trail admission. Current members that show their pride and support will receive a 15% discount on most merchandise.

Creating a pollinator garden, 10 a.m. June 28. Learn from Hawk Mountain volunteers what it takes to create a sustainable year-round pollinator garden. This includes learning about the pollinators that will come to visit and what they need for their entire life cycle. We will also recommend specific pollinator-friendly plants that will really help make your pollinator garden come to life.

A tour of the Native Habitat Garden will follow the presentation, so please dress for the weather. This event is ADA accessible.

Let Freedom Wing, July 4-6. Celebrate Independence Day weekend at Hawk Mountain and wear red, white, and blue apparel or accessories to receive half off your trail admission! And Mountain Members who wear the colors are eligible to pick a flag for a prize in the Visitor Center.

LEHIGH GAP: Pack up your paints and spend a day plein air painting at Lehigh Gap Nature Center 9 a.m. to noon July 14 or Aug. 6. Join nature center staff for this open-format program where each participant is invited to bring their own supplies (all mediums are welcome) and create artwork outside inspired by the Lehigh Gap Refuge. Compact travel easels are available to borrow, but you are welcome to bring your own set up. Each person must bring their own art supplies. They have water containers for paint and limited brushes available to borrow. The plein air session will take place outside, please dress for the weather and wear shoes fit for walking outside. Please note that there is no instructor leading this program. This free plein air painting days are an opportunity to create art alongside other artists while enjoying the views of the Lehigh Gap. PASSPORT EVENT: The Passport to 4-H event will be held 6 to 8 p.m. July 7, 15 and 22 at 4184 Dorney Park Road, Lehigh County Agricultural Center, Allentown. Event is open to youth ages 5-7 and is limited to the first 12 registrants. No cost for 4-H members. Contact Ellyn Siftar at 610-391-9840.
