Northampton Connie Mack playing well
In most circles, pitching will be a team’s cornerstone for success.
This summer, Northampton’s Connie Mack team is relying on its hitting to carry them through a solid first half run. A recent 3-0 loss to South Parkland snapped a six-game winning streak.
However, the Konkrete Kids have scored 10 or more runs in five of their seven wins this season to post their 7-2 record.
“After a hot start where we have been averaging over 10 runs scored per game. We lost a tough one to South Parkland last night, 3-0,” said head coach Mike Biechy. “We had some opportunities in the first and second inning, but just couldn’t get the big hit.”
Yet, Biechy well knows the difference of the season.
“The real story has been our hitting,” boasted Biechy. “We have eight guys hitting above .350 right now and a team batting average of .388. The bats were just cold against South Parkland, but we’ll bounce back. That’s just the way baseball goes sometimes. It really has been a team effort to this point.”
Among those hitting .400 or better beginning this week were Nate Kovach .529 with a team-high 12 RBIs and also 11 hits; Ty Rutzmoyer, .524, 11 hits; Logan Rusnock, .500, team-high 13 hits; Zach Hartzell, .444, team-high 13 runs scored; and Tyler Biechy, .409, 10 runs.
On the mound, the Kids do have an impressive 2.62 team ERA. Aidan Sergent had a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and a team-high 14 strikeouts. Biechy is 2-0, 1.61; Kovach is 1-0, 2.00; and Quinn Hughes is 1-0, 3.28.
The Kids opened the week against Moore Township and at East Stroudsburg Wednesday. They will have a key showdown with Nazareth next Monday.
Biechy believes his club will be tested in the future, but he is confident with his overall depth.
“We are coming into the tough part of our schedule with three of our next four games against East Stroudsburg, Southern Lehigh, and Nazareth,” said Biechy. “Our pitching has been strong. We have eight guys that can throw and the innings have been spread out among all those guys pretty evenly so far.
