Early exit for Valley Cup team
The Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup baseball team had another first round exit from this year’s tournament last week, falling to Olympic Colonial 9-2.
It marked the fourth-straight year the Lehigh Valley squad lost in the opening round of the single-elimination tournament.
Bethlehem Catholic head coach Matt Corsi has helped coached the Carpenter Cup squad the past two seasons and feels the frustration that comes along with the early exits.
“This is my second year, but yes it has been frustrating the last few years not getting out of the first round,” said Corsi. “We get to see the best of the best in Philly. This is a very fun tournament and we just need to keep plugging away, stay positive and get the best out for the team.”
Nazareth’s Chase Kilareski had two hits for the Lehigh Valley in the loss, while Becahi’s Caden Deegan had the only RBI for the team.
Corsi hopes things will be looking brighter for the group heading into next year, as they had six sophomores and freshmen combined in this year’s starting nine.
“We are hoping that sets us up well for the future,” he said. “We had a total of eight freshmen and sophomores on the 21 man roster.
“We are changing things up for next year and are actually going to have a meeting next week to talk about changes and how to get the best of the Lehigh Valley to come out and play Carpenter Cup. We need to stress how great of an opportunity this is and the type of competition we are facing when we get down to Philly.”
This year’s final features Chester County against Burlington County in a PA-NJ showdown.
