Governing a people should be much more than simply ‘closing deals.’

To the Editor:

We are only 19 weeks into this Trump administration and I am already bone-weary of the constant talk of ‘deals’ being done.

I don’t want to seem naive about politics; I understand that different parties or entities often have different values or goals and need to reach livable agreements in order for progress to occur. But framing serious, sometimes life-and-death situations — the violence being done to children in Ukraine and Gaza as well as here in deportation policies/practices and in possible fiscal-policy changes is unconscionable to me — solely as ‘deals’ to be made turns people into commodities and important moral issues into simplistic economic equations.

Governing a people should be much more than simply ‘closing deals.’
