Paw Prints draws crowd

The 16th annual Paw Prints on the Canal was held June 8 at Canal Street Park in Northampton. The event was again hailed a success, as more vendors participate each year.

The goal is to raise money for Northampton Police Department’s K-9 unit. Over the years, the event has brought in tens of thousands of dollars.

Dogs of all sizes strolled the park with their humans.

Highlights of the day included displays by numerous pet rescues, a microchipping clinic, various food vendors, crafts, clothing merchandise and more.

The sharp-dressed pet contest was held 1 p.m. The winners of the contest were LuLu, pet of Gayle Vasquez, in third place; Bayo and Bowie, both pets of Sarah VanDunk, second place; and Leonardo, with his mom Dianna, first place. Leonardo was professionally dressed in interesting colors, while Dianna was dressed as a cow.

There were dog training sessions at the portable band shelter during the day. A service dog, trained by Caitlin’s Animal Training Services of Whitehall, held a demonstration. Caitlin’s Animal Training Services provides various dog training classes. Visit caitlinsanimals.com or call 484-619-3554 for information about her services.

One stand had a large two-footed dog named Mike with an odd bark. Turned out Mike is the mascot for the Tri-Boro Fencing Contractors of Walnutport. Visit tri-borofencing.com to review its wide array of fencing options. Christopher and Nikki Jones would love to speak with you about your fencing needs.

Northampton Borough Fire Department had a presence at the event, with a large firetruck, fire safety literature and other items.

Other features of the day included raffle tickets and an ice cream and bake sale. Music and entertainment was provided by a deejay.

Nadine Shull, of Northampton, enjoyed the event with her dog, Atlas. Angie Castro, of Bethlehem, was there with her dog, Hercules, who appeared happy with all the pleasant aromas of food.

The weather was near perfect, with fluffy white clouds dotting the sunlit sky with a refreshing breeze. Light showers eventually rolled in during the late afternoon.

Local attendees, as well as those outside the Lehigh Valley from areas such as Stroudsburg, Reading and beyond, were on hand to support animals and enjoy the community event.

Visit Paw Prints on the Canal Facebook page for more information on making a donation or signing up as a future volunteer. The public is also encouraged to volunteer at one of the many animal rescues throughout the Lehigh Valley.
