Daniel J. Yakubecek

former WCSD superintendent

Daniel J. Yakubecek, 92, a lifelong resident of Whitehall, died June 4, 2025, at Sterling Heights Retirement Community, Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Snyder) Yakubecek for nearly 60 years.

Born in Egypt, he was a son of the late Jacob G. Jr. and Mary (Tremba) Yakubecek.

He graduated from Whitehall High School in 1950. After his military service, he studied at Muhlenberg College and Temple University. He completed his bachelor’s degree in education at Kutztown University. He later earned a master’s degree in education and a superintendent’s letter of eligibility from Lehigh University.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years aboard the USS Arneb, an amphibious attack ship.

Yakubecek began his career in education as a fifth-grade teacher in Whitehall-Coplay School District. He went on to service in the WCSD as an elementary school principal, middle school principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent of schools. He served as superintendent from 1975 to 1993.

He was also an adjunct professor at Penn State University’s Lehigh Valley campus. He played the guitar and spent his early years playing in several local dance bands.

He was director of the Lehigh Valley branch of Volunteers of America and president of Whitehall Lions Club. He was also a member of Kiwanis Club; Masonic Lodge No. 248, North Catasauqua; and Disabled Veterans of America Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Robyn Hines and husband Shawn of Center Valley; a grandson, Cameron of Center Valley; a brother, Dennis of Whitehall; a sister, Jeanean Kroninger of Maidencreek; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Dinbokowitz.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
