SMS students get tropical with Hawaiian Night May 30
Salisbury Middle School held a Hawaiian Night for students May 30, allowing the kids to have a night of fun as the school year comes quickly to a close.
The night was held in a tropically-decked out gymnasium in the Salisbury Middle School building.
Students, many of whom dressed in tropical patterns, were welcomed with games of cornhole, basketball and a huge Connect 4 game to play with their friends, all while listening to booming music, deejayed by the students themselves.
The night is planned and put together by the Interact Club at SMS led by fifth through eighth grade physical education teacher Julie Giardina.
The group is a service-based club, with the goal of the night being, alongside giving their fellow classmates a good time, to donate the proceeds from Hawaiian Night to a charity of the club members’ choosing. In the past, SMS’s Interact Club has donated to causes like the Humane Society and Lily’s Hope Foundation.
The funds for this donation come from the admission fee students paid at the door and any money made from the concession stand, filled with sweet treats and refreshments for the students to purchase throughout the night.
Along with snacks, attending students had the chance to battle each other in a blow-up jousting ring and get into the theme by choosing a lei to wear from the rainbow of options made available to them.
This is Giardina’s first year running the club, but not the first time a Hawaiian Night has been held for this purpose. Giardina said she wanted to continue holding the night after taking over the club.
“It’s going great this year, so I’m hoping to continue to hold it in the following years as well,” Giardina said.
No complaints will be heard from the students if this tradition continues, as they danced the night away and marked the impending end to the 2024-2025 Salisbury school year.
