Ohlson’s looking good again in adult hoops
Two-time defending champion Ohlson’s Landscaping appears to be on track to defend its title in the Catasauqua Summer Basketball League.
During the past two seasons, Ohlson’s also has won the Battle of the Boroughs, which replaced the Tournament of Champions after their 30-year run.
This is the 40th year of the Catty League, and it and the North Catty League are the two remaining summer leagues in the greater Lehigh Valley.
Heading into this week’s play, Ohlson’s had a 5-0 record, and their main challengers in the 10-team league will be Daku Auto Body (3-2), Catty Corner (2-2), and Rebel Fam (3-1).
Ohlson’s features former Parkland standouts Ed Ohlson and Jaden Thomas, Allentown Central Catholic and Princeton University’s Gabe Lewullis, and Allen High’s Ray Barbosa among other former notable high school players.
Rain has played a major factor in the schedule this season, as a number of games have been rescheduled.
League director and Catasauqua head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder, who has directed the league since 1989, believes Ohlson’s can make another deep run, and also sees the rest of the league as being balanced.
“Ohlson’s Landscaping is undefeated and looks like they could go through the league undefeated,” said Snyder. “The rest of the league is at times very equal.”
Recent results from the North Catty League were Bet On Us 66, Palermo’ Italian Grill, 57, Josh Washington 30 points; Team Escobar 55, B-Town Blazers 53, K.J. Mangroo 21 points; Rebel Fam 59, Curmaci Dental 57, Arnel Lewis 18 points.
The leagues will hold semifinal playoffs with the highest versus the lower seeds July 7, and the championship will be held July 9.
A date for the fifth annual Battle of the Boroughs has yet to be set, and it will again pit the champions of the Catty League and the North Catty League against each other in a best-of-three championship series format.
