Parkland tops LHS in finals

Liberty’s run to a fourth straight district championship came to an end last week, but their season stayed alive on Monday afternoon following an 11-3 victory over West Chester Henderson in the opening round of the PIAA 6A baseball tournament.

The Hurricanes bounced back from a 2-0 hole in the first inning to run away late, scoring all their runs in the final three frames for a state opening win.

After losing in the district championship to Parkland last week 1-0, head coach Andy Pitsilos knew his team needed to be better at the plate if they wanted their season to survive.

“What I take away from the district run is that we went cold hitting the last two games and Parkland played a great game,” said Pitsilos. “We now have to reset and take one game at a time.”

Trailing 2-0 heading into the fifth on Monday, Liberty got on the board with an RBI single by Kamron Kensicki to give them a jolt.

Then the Hurricanes (21-6) took command in the sixth, scoring four runs to pull ahead 5-2.

After a bases-loaded walk tied the game, Dylan Metzgar put Liberty ahead for good with a three RBI double.

Henderson got back a glimmer of hope with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3, but a six-run seventh by Liberty cemented their status as PIAA quarterfinalists.

Liberty will play District 3 champion Governor Mifflin (23-1) on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
