Newest council member takes oath of office
Macungie Borough Council met June 2 at the Macungie Institute when Megan Sell was introduced as the newest council member. She takes the seat from Barry Bloch who resigned recently.
Sell has been a resident of Macungie for seven years. She has been a youth group leader, former owner of MadDog’s in Macungie and continues various and ongoing charitable work. In her letter to council, she said she is “committed to working collaboratively with residents, business owners and fellow council members to address concerns and implement solutions that benefit our entire community. I have the time to be accessible, responsive and accountable to those I would represent.”
In other business, the Main Street bump outs have been a concern due to water retention and drainage. A proposal has been made to improve the drainage. There will be a brick border with two openings for water to enter and the other for it to exit. Occasionally these openings will have to be cleaned out because debris may build up.
A proposal was made to hire a landscaper as the public works department does not have the expertise to handle this project. Further research will continue.
Donna Kohut has resigned from the planning commission. John Brown, borough manager, has been interviewing candidates for public works and a zoning officer.
Herr Signal and Lighting requested its third payment of $29,500. This money was received through a grant.
An agreement was made with Lehigh County for the purchase of police radios.
Public works is requesting a chlorine gas detector for $5,285. This was approved.
Public works has requested Knox boxes for several borough buildings including Macungie Institute, borough hall and the public works building. This box holds the key for that particular building. The locked box is located at the facility and the fire department has the key to open these boxes.
A part-time police officer has been chosen. His name is Isaac Fried and he will be the 30-hour officer.
A resident spoke about the building of taller buildings in Macungie. He said the storage facility behind Embassy Bank is taller than originally mentioned. The apartment buildings were raised up by another floor to add parking facilities. Residents are not happy about this trend.
There was an executive session held for legal and personnel issues.
