Hanover appoints Shafnisky, Leide to appeals board
At its May 21 meeting, Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council appointed two residents, Thomas Shafnisky and Christoph Leide, to the township’s building code and appeals board. The board has four members and one alternate.
A township building code is a set of rules and regulations enacted by a township to ensure buildings meet minimum standards for safety, health and general welfare.
A building code of appeals is a quasi-judicial board that hears appeals related to the interpretation and enforcement of those codes. The building code of appeals board provides a forum for individuals or businesses to appeal decisions made by building code officials.
In other news, council opened bid 2025-01 for the Lloyd Street mill and overlay project. It is expected the project will be completed over the summer.
Street sweeping will continue through Nov. 1. The township office reminded residents that vehicles must be moved on your street’s designated day to avoid ticketing and so the sweeper can clean the streets without delay. The street sweeping schedule can be found on the township’s website.
Several weather- and earth-related reminders were discussed. Since 1996, 99% of counties in the United States were affected by flooding. Most insurance policies do not protect against flooding. Visit FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program at floodsmart.gov for information.
More than a million ink cartridges are thrown in the trash each day. Recycle your used printer ink cartridges from your home or office by mail. Free mail-in cartridge recycling is available by visiting planetgreenrecycle.com.
Council mentioned its policy on animals. It is unlawful for any person to permit an animal to run at large upon any public thoroughfare, public ground or public park property or to run at large on any private property other than the owners’ property.
Animal owners are responsible for immediately removing and properly disposing of all animal waste from any public property or any private property.
Stray animals should be safely contained, if possible, until contacting the township for advice on animal pickup or drop-off by the township’s designated organization.
