PHS boys win league meet title

The Parkland track and field teams finished off another successful year in the East Penn Conference with a stellar dual meet.

After going unbeaten in dual meets for the fifth straight season, the Trojans were awarded their regular season trophies at the league championship meet.

The Parkland boys team also hoisted a trophy after taking the team title at the EPC Championships, which were held last Wednesday and Thursday at Whitehall.

The Parkland boys team had two individual gold medalists and one relay team top the podium, along with several other medalists.

Jaden Bulgin (high jump) and Macelo Castilla (800) won individual events at leagues. The Trojan boys 4x800 relay team and the girls 4x400 also took home gold medals last week.

Bulgin cleared 6 feet, 5 inches in high jump to win the event.

“Last year I came here and jumped 6-1,” he said. “I went indoor this year and got a bronze medal at states. I wanted a gold medal. I finally got that gold medal, so it was nice.”

Bulgin hit a career high of 6-9 a few weeks ago, but hadn’t hit anything over 6-3 during the remainder of the regular season until last week.

“I think the best thing I did was not get in my head about the recent slump I’ve been in,” said Bulgin, who also took second place in long jump. “I came here confident.”

The Trojan senior will look to hit 6-5 or high again this week at districts as that is the state-qualifying mark in Class 3A boys high jump.

Castilla ran the 800-meter race in 1:58.23 to finish first.

He stayed behind Bethlehem Catholic’s Mekhi Britt until the second lap, when he closed the gap and passed the Golden Hawk in the final 100 meters.

“I try to race as smart as possible to maintain energy,” said Castilla, who was also part of two medal-winning relay teams. “It worked so I’m really happy about it.”

The junior posted a career-best time by two seconds in winning the 800.

Castilla joined teammates Anthony Cappellini, Logan McEvoy and Henry Stein to win the 4x800 relay last week. They ran the event in 8:05.04 to beat second-place Emmaus by over four seconds.

Parkland’s girls 4x400 relay team of Ana Gbur, Kaley Seide, Lucy Tobia and Cierra Valley also won by a wide margin, taking first place in 4:00.84, nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Stroudsburg.

“It felt awesome,” said Valley, one of two seniors on the relay. “We were all looking forward to it. We have a strong team. We were excited to go out there and perform.”

The team has its eyes on the school record of 3:57.

“Breaking the record was mostly our goal,” said Tobia, the relay team’s other senior.

The 4x400 is the final race of the two-day meet. And 400-meter sprints aren’t easy even on fresh legs. But the Trojans came back from a deficit in the race and pulled out the win.

“I saw a girl in front of me so my goal was to catch that girl,” said Seide. “I caught her and I was just trying to push my best. We’ve all had a lot of events today, four events for most of us. The goal was just to go out and try to win.”

Now they’ll look to this week’s district meet for another win and another opportunity get their names in the school record book.

“Run a personal best for the season,” said Gbur of the team’s goals at districts. “Try to get out there and run sub-four minutes and get the win.”

Several other Parkland athletes earned medals at the league meet.

Radnor Rowlands (100), Anthony Cappellini (400), Seide (200) and Emily Hoysan (100 hurdles) earned silver medals at the meet, along with three PHS relays teams, including the boys 4x400 (Cappellini, Castilla, Landon Hoppel and Logan McEvoy), the boys 4x100 (Lincoln Clark, Leo Dauberman, Mehki Lewis, Rowlands) and the girls 4x100 (Dhaniya Miner, Seide, Tobia, Valley).

Trojan third-place finishers at leagues were Gbur (300 hurdles), Dauberman (javelin, discus), McEvoy (3200), Owen Tobias (pole vault), Tobia (400) and Genevieve Inserra (pole vault).

Finishing fourth for Parkland at the league championship meet were Colin McGuigan (1600), Sam Ciampittiello (110 hurdles), Gbur (100 hurdles), the girls 4x800 relay team, Vanessa Ball (javelin) and Gabriella Borgos (pole vault).
