Nelson repeats as CL champ
Plenty of high jumpers are able to land one big jump in their careers, maybe even two or three.
But only the best can achieve their mark over and over. Being able to count on making a height when it matters is what they all strive to achieve.
Consistency is the key, as has been the case for Northwestern Lehigh senior Gavin Nelson.
Nelson cleared 6 feet, 8 inches to defend his Colonial League crown in the high jump last week, then came within inches of clearing 6-11 — a mark that would have been a new personal best, which is currently 6-10.
“I was right there,” Nelson said. “It was just a tweak — maybe my run-up or speed. But it’s something that can be fixed with practice. I’m confident I’ll get it.”
Nelson, who steadily worked his way up from 6-1 and placed third in the event at states a year ago, mirrored the same calm and methodical approach that has helped him become one of the state’s most reliable jumpers. The inspiration? Tigers’ graduate Faith Yost, who won a state title in the same event during Gavin’s freshman year.
“She always told me it’s not about how high you jump — it’s how consistent you are,” he said. “That’s stuck with me.”
While Nelson was the Tigers’ only gold medalist at leagues, several of his teammates earned medals for finishing in the top four in their events. Freshman Rosalia Nestor came away from her first league championships with four medals. She finished second in the 800- and 1600-meter runs and took third in the 3200. She was also part of a silver-medal winning 4x800 relay team. She posted personal best times in all of her events and qualified for freshman New Balance Nationals in the 800 and 3200.
“I’ve been running since seven or eight so I’m used to big meets like this,” said Nestor, who experienced great success in her first year at the high school level in both track and cross country. “My mindset is if you believe you can, you can. If you believe you can’t, you can’t. I knew if I push myself I would have that success. I just needed to trust the process and take care of my body.”
Other individual silver medalists at leagues for the Tigers included Shane Leh, who ran the 110-meter hurdles in 15.90, and Kylie Christman, who took second place with a 115-foot throw in javelin.
The Northwestern girls 4x400 also finished second at leagues, while the boys 4x800 team finished third at the meet.
Four Tiger athletes earned fourth-place medals at leagues, including Bradley Burnard (triple jump, 42-9), Brendan Miller (javelin, 155-9), Megan Fornwalt (400, 1:00.14) and Norah Silfies (high jump, 4-11).
Medals were awarded to the top four finishers in each event.
The Tigers are back in action this week at the District 11 Class 3A Championships.
