Lozada, Yakaitis earn D-11 gold

Two Salisbury athletes earned gold medals last week at the District 11 Track and Field Championships.

Steven Lozada (pole vault) and Emma Yakaitis (300-meter hurdles) both earned their first district gold medals while also qualifying for this weekend’s state meet, where they will be joined by teammate Joshua Hudak, who made states with a third-place finish in triple jump.

Lozada, a two-time Colonial League champ, will compete in states for the first time after clearing 13 feet last week.

“It’s a little bittersweet because I wanted to get a better height,” Lozada said. “But getting gold and securing states is a good feeling.”

Lozada has cleared 14 feet this season and is close to getting over the bar at 14-1.

At districts the Falcon junior started at 12 feet and then went right to 13, which he cleared on the first try to secure the win.

While pole vault is his main event, Lozada also qualified for states in the triple jump with a leap of 44-9.75. That mark was a career best by one inch and good for second place at districts, which were held last Tuesday and Thursday at Whitehall High School.

Hudak also qualified for states in the triple jump by taking third place with a leap of 44-2.5.

“We push each other in practice all the time,” said Lozada. “I’m excited to get another week and a half of practice.”

Yakaitis, a sophomore who earned a district silver medal with the Salisbury field hockey team last fall, grabbed gold with a time of 47.16 in 300 hurdles.

“It felt really good,” she said. “Probably the best feeling I’ve ever had. Standing on top of the podium holding the district sign just felt amazing.”

While the hurdle event was her only gold, Yakaitis was also happy about her relay team’s third-place finish at districts.

The 4x100 relay team of Isabella Nimeh, Izabella Gonzalez, Kendra Morgan and Yakaitis finished third in 50.84. The foursome broke it’s own school record in the event and will return all of its members next season in hopes of lowering the number and moving up on the podium.

“We all wanted [to break the school record], no matter if we got first, second, third or fourth,” said Yakaitis. “We just keep breaking it. I think it’s our fourth time breaking it.”

Salisbury’s Gabriella Pena also earned a silver medal at districts. She cleared 8-0 in pole vault for second place.

Falcon fourth-place medal winners at districts include Gregory Tenzer, who ran the 800 in 2:02.45 for fourth place; Morgan, who ran the 200 in 26.38; and the boys 4x800 relay team of Edward Ballek, Emerson Juhasz, Thomas Pojanowski and Tenzer, who ran a time of 8:57.10.

The state championship meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.
