Falcon softball team keeps bouncing back

The Lady Falcons just keep bouncing back.

While the young Salisbury softball team may struggle against some of the more experienced teams in the Colonial League, the Falcons not allowed setbacks to ruin their season.

They have been able to just shake off the losses and beat the teams that they are supposed to be beating in what has been an overall strong season.

Their latest loss was significant in that they faced Notre Dame of Green Pond (9-2 Colonial, 11-5 overall) and lost a 4-3 battle against a team destined for postseason play.

The Falcons took advantage of a two-out walk to Sophia Gunning in the third inning and turned it into a run as Tessa Kemmerer singled to center to move Gunning to third. Gianna Olds singled to left to bring in the first run of the game.

After falling behind 2-1, the Falcons battled back and again did it with two outs, this time in the fifth inning.

Kemmerer doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Olds unleashed a line-drive single to center to tie the game at 2-2.

Notre Dame pulled back in front with runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Gunning launched a 1-1 pitch out to center field to make things interesting.

One out later, it was Olds picking up her third single of the game, but Notre Dame was able to get the final out to end the rally.

Kemmerer allowed just two earned runs in the game and struck out six batters over six in innings for Salisbury.

Any frustration that the Falcons had was taken out on Catasauqua in an 11-1 win.

Salisbury came up with 11 hits against the Rough Riders, including two doubles from Amelia Swoyer and one double each from Gunning and Olds to go along with a triple and a team-high four RBI from Leilanna Negron.

Olds continued with the hot bat as she collected two hits and drove in three runs.

Jenna Swoyer threw all five innings in the win and struck out nine batters.

Salisbury will need a lot to go right over the final four games to make the league playoffs, but with a 7-9 overall record, playing in the District 11 tournament is not out of the question.

The remaining schedule won’t make it easy, but it is certainly a possibility for a team that has just two seniors and no juniors.

The Falcons have four games remaining on the schedule, all in the Colonial League.

They will play two games against Saucon Valley (5-6, 6-7) and one each against Southern Lehigh (6-5, 11-6) and Palisades (10-3, 13-3).
