Hensel helped to lead

Ever since he can remember, Northampton’s Tommy Hensel has been involved with baseball.

It has been a love affair that has involved his family.

“I’ve been playing baseball ever since I could walk,” beamed Hensel. “I was born into a baseball family and raised as a die-hard Phillies fan. My mom played softball at Rutgers, and she’s the one who really got me into the game.”

In his senior season, Hensel’s game raised another level.

Hensel was among the team leaders in batting average, hits, on base percentage and slugging percentage.

Despite the Kids not making the playoffs this season, Hansel still saw some positives.

“We’re an extremely talented team, and when we put it all together, we’re tough to beat,” boasted Hensel. “This is the most tight-knit group I’ve ever been part of — we’re like one big family, both on and off the field.”

Tammy Van Blargan-Hensel, his mother, has been a steady force in his life.

“Without a doubt, my mom has had the biggest influence on my career,” stressed Hensel. “She’s always pushed me to be the best I can be, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without her.”

Hensel has enjoyed his success being a fixture at first base, a new transition for him. He also has spent some time on the mound this season.

“I haven’t played first base my whole life,” said Hensel. “I actually started playing there at the end of my sophomore year. Before that, I was always a third baseman. It was definitely a big change, but I’ve come to really enjoy it.”

Head coach Mick Sugra liked what he has seen from Hensel.

“He [was] a leader on this team,” said Sugra. “He has done a nice job with his bat and on the mound for us.”

Hensel as relished his playing time after has limited time last season.

“As a senior, my role is to be a leader,” said Hensel. “Last year, I had just 10 at-bats, so I know what it’s like to be stuck on the bench and have to wait for your turn. This year, I’m making the most of every opportunity and doing whatever I can to help the team win.”
