Baseball looks to build after some late-season wins
With a young team, Catasauqua’s baseball team took its lumps throughout most of the season.
Yet, the Rough Riders continued to try to come together by the time things were said and done. Next year, they will have a returning core with much-needed experience under their belts.
The Rough Riders ended the season with a 3-16 mark.
“We had a lot of young players who should have been playing another year of JV ball,” said Roughies’ head coach Steve Bradley. “But our younger guys have been coming around. They are starting to settle down and gain more confidence.
“We didn’t get as much as we expected from our older guys. Overall, though, [we looked] to finish out the season on a high note, and [thought] we can pull out a couple more wins.”
The Roughs did just that. They knocked off Dieruff 12-8 and avenged an early, 18-1 loss to Salisbury with an 8-5 win before falling to Southern Lehigh in their last game.
The Roughies were impressive with a season-high 18 hits in the win over Dieruff. Lynkan Moore smashed a three-run homer, Matt Fotta went 3-for-5, Asael Gonzalez went 4-for-5, and Cody Roth was 3-for-4.
Freshman Joe Conway threw four strong innings.
“It was a big win for us,” added Bradley. “The kids played well in all aspects of the game for us. Conway looked good, and he is developing for us.”
Bradley was impressed with sophomore hurler Alex Bolmer, whose 1-5, 5.15 ERA wasn’t a true reflection of his performance, as he has lacked run support most times when he took the mound.
“Alex has thrown our best all season,” stressed Bradley. “He threw really good game against Saucon Valley. He has gotten better with each outing.”
Freshman second baseman Cody Roth with a .302 average and has 13 hits, and Gonzalez, a sophomore, was hitting .278 with a team-high 15 hits near the end of the season.
“Cody has been solid for us all season,” noted Bradley. “He has made a lot of strides. Asael is hitting much better, and he is playing a solid third base. When he gets on base, he takes extra bases because he is so fast.”
