Memorial Day tribute

Joint veterans organization hosts ceremony

A solemn Memorial Day ceremony was held May 26 at the veterans plaza at Washington and 14th streets. Northampton Joint Veterans Organization — Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714, Catholic War Veterans Post 454 and American Legion Post 353 — hosted the annual event.

Post 353 Service Officer Conrad Abelovsky was the master of ceremonies. Also present were Post 4714 Commander Larry Schlittler, Post 454 Commander Bruce Shellock and Post 353 Commander Eric Spooner.

Abelovsky provided his opening remarks that concluded with him addressing attendees and veterans present.

“On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Catholic War Veterans and the American Legion of Northampton, all Northampton residents present, thank you all for your dedicated service,” he said.

Abelovsky commanded the robust agenda, which began with the tolling of the bell by Joan Glover, Catholic War Veterans second vice president.

The next agenda item was the playing of the national anthem by the Northampton Area High School orchestra. The national anthem was followed by an opening prayer by Father Patrick Lamb, pastor of the Queenship of Mary Roman Catholic Church, at 1324 Newport Ave.

Northampton Mayor Anthony Pristash provided an uplifting speech, with a grateful theme for the service of veterans who laid down their lives for freedom. He thanked those in attendance for being an advocate for veterans and keeping their memories alive.

State Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, talked about the veterans who died for our freedom. He added a personal touch by speaking about two servicemen he served with in Afghanistan who tragically lost their lives there.

Ret. Air Force Lt. Col. Alex Alexander provided a talk that addressed the statement “freedom is not free.” He talked about the sacrifices of those lost in battle and its effect on their families.

Four wreaths were placed to honor the Northampton deceased veterans — one from each of the three veterans organizations and one for the Chapman Lodge.

After the presentations, the NAHS orchestra played “My Country ’tis of Thee,” followed by a recording of a song by a military glee club. A rifle salute followed the songs and the playing of echo taps.

Gene Kutzler played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes, followed by a closing prayer.

At the event conclusion, all present were invited to visit American Legion Post 353, about a block away from the veterans plaza, which was open for members and guests.

During the program and solemn ceremony, there was reverence for the veterans’ sacrifices and respect for the surviving family members, with some shedding tears.

The Northampton Joint Veterans Organization works in unison to assist veterans and to keep a focus on their sacrifice for our freedom.
