SMOKE ALARMS: On Saturday, May 31, 2025, volunteers and members of the American Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter and Bethlehem Fire Department will team up to install free smoke alarms for local families vulnerable to home fires during a Sound the Alarm event in Bethlehem. This effort is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 2.320 lives since launching in October 2014.
Volunteers will convene at the Bahnson Center at Moravian Theological Seminary for a kickoff meeting and training session. Then, teams of volunteers and firefighters will be assigned to neighborhoods throughout the city to install smoke alarms and discuss home fire safety with residents. Neighbors are encouraged to sign up for a free smoke alarm installation appointment by calling 570-217-1397 or visiting SoundTheAlarm.org/greaterpa.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Sound the Alarm is a rewarding way to give back and directly help local families. Sign up to volunteer by visiting rdcrss.org/4jDvfO9. No prior experience is needed; training will be provided at the Sound the Alarm event. Volunteers under 18 require parental consent.
BOOK SALE: Hellertown Area Library book sale, Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dimmick Park Pavilion 570 Durham St., Hellertown. A story time will be held at 10:30 a.m. and refreshments will be available. All proceeds benefit the library.
HERITAGE FUNDRAISER: The Esther Lee African-American Heritage Center is hosting a Hats and High Tea buffet luncheon fundraiser, June 7 at noon at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem to preserve and celebrate African-American history, culture and legacy.
