Meeting a showcase of resident concerns

City council heard many resident complaints May 6, offering little in response but obligatory “thank yous.”

A representative from the Monocacy HOA expressed concerns regarding the homeless roaming in and out of residents’ homes, having fire pits and intimidating residents on trails. She also said they need trash receptacles for dog waste.

Businessman Anthony Spagnola said the business privilege tax and said when council members needed votes they all came into his business, but he hasn’t seen them since. He questioned whether these “concerns are falling on deaf ears.”

Charlene Jenkins Southside parks lack attention, citing the Bethlehem Saints practice field is run down, with no scoreboard and no lines on the field.

Joseph Lee said he is concerned about BB gun safety and the handling of police matters.

Lou Jimenez, president of the Bethlehem firefighters’ union Local 735, said he’s been actively working with the fire department to find additional ways to improve staffing. He stressed the need to properly staff the North West Fire Station, Engine 9, with one fire officer and two firefighters every hour of every day.

Stephen Antalics spoke of finding and supporting the best candidates to fill the open council seats. He suggested looking at what incumbents seeking reelection have done and how they serve the community before casting a vote.

Bethlehem Fire Chief Michael Reich gave a very extensive report on the recent four-alarm fire at Five 10 Flats on the Southside. The building is five stories tall and contains 95 apartments on floors 2-5, and seven businesses on the first floor. One hundred thirty-five residents have been displaced and over 12 agencies are actively assisting people affected.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, changed due to Tuesday being the primary election.
