District feels money pinch

Just like many other school districts, Bethlehem’s is facing financial concerns in today’s fluctuating markets and uncertainty. Chief Financial Officer Harry Aristakesian presented a revised draft of the 2025-26 budget of $373.5 million that needs to be finalized and approved by June 9. Superintendent Dr. Jack Silva described the budget revisions as, “Some tightening of the belt.”

$3.4 million in savings was secured by eliminating 20 positions and putting off some capital outlays. There is also less spending on transportation. Even with cuts the district taxpayer could see a 4.3 percent increase in property taxes.

Money from the state will be revealed when the governor’s budget is released – federal money has yet to be determined. Both should positively impact taxpayers. Board President Michael Faccinetto stressed the budget has not yet been finalized. He said, “Things can change and will change, most certainly, but this is where we are right now”

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maureen Leeson and Chief Pupil Services Officer Claire Hogan discussed the previous week’s Curriculum Committee meeting and the ongoing debate over students’ use of smartphones and technology in the classroom. The technology policy faced more revisions and additions as was presented for the committees consideration.
