The Parkland School Board began the May 13 meeting with recognition of students who have excelled in various disciplines.
Eddy Zhang, who is in ninth grade, scored in the top .2% of all exam takers in the country in the American Mathematics Competition.
He was in the top 142 in the United States and one of only three in Pennsylvania to score highly.
Zhang’s teacher, Dr. Kristin Yudt, noted he is so proficient, he would be able to teach AP Calculus.
Turning to athletics, the board commended Angelina Spachman for winning a state silver medal in girls wrestling.
In another field, Niva Sullivan was honored for receiving a Congressional Art Award.
Moving on to another competition, the board applauded the district winter guard which won a gold medal in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States Indoor Association tournaments. The winter guard participates in indoor shows.
“They put on an outstanding theatrical performance. It has been 26 years since the Parkland winter guard has won a gold medal,” Dr. Renee Mosser, director of visual and performing arts, said.
There was one additional recognition for the evening where Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson complimented Elsa Hoderewski for her service as student representative to the board for the 2024-2025 school term.
“Thank you for all your time and care. You covered not only the high school but also reached out to the middle and elementary schools. You’ve given great reports at meetings every month. You’ve done an excellent job,” Madson said.
