Freedom’s softball team had two jobs to do last week: beat Liberty for the third time this season and beat Nazareth for the first time this year.
The Patriots, coached by Michele Laubach, got both jobs done and in so doing were crowned Eastern Pennsylvania Conference champions on May 15 at Pates Park, Allentown.
Beating Liberty, 1-0, in the EPC semifinal was as much about revenge as it was about advancing to the EPC final as the Hurricanes won all three of their games against the Pates last season.
In this year’s EPC semifinal on May 12, Daniela Guzzo’s RBI scored the only run of the game. Namelia Duro was the winning pitcher in Freedom’s third win over Liberty this season.
Duro had the game winning RBI in the EPC final against Nazareth who led 1-0 for two innings until Patriot catcher Payton Besecker tied the game on an RBI double.
Duro again was the winning pitcher.
All three teams will compete in the District XI Softball Championships which are scheduled to begin this week.
