Larry Christman is living a dream because he followed the passion he discovered as a teenager and has enjoyed a 50-year career that is still going strong. He does not dream of retirement, as his passion still burns inside.
On May 15, he celebrated 50 years in the hairstyling business with Larry Christman’s Salon.
His business, located at 2236 N. First Ave., Whitehall, is a cozy salon where his wife, Jayne, and his employee, Lisa Fisher, labor. Fisher is a close friend who has been working with Jayne and Larry Christman for about 30 years. Jayne Christman noted her husband has been cutting hair for 60 years.
Fisher and Jayne Christman met in cosmetology school many years ago and became friends and colleagues.
Larry Christman graduated from high school and entered barber school in 1965. His first job included one year in barber school, followed by a one-year apprenticeship to ease into the profession. As his experience grew, he started his own salon — and 50 years later, he remains steeped in the profession.
Larry Christman said he was on the Pennsylvania styling team for 15 years. As a result, he taught new hair styles to others. He noted most new hair styles come from Europe.
He also was on the National Cosmetology Association’s men’s team. Jayne Christman was on the National Nail Technology team.
“We traveled all over the United States,” Larry Christman said, because of their involvement in not only a local business but also their interest in new styles and trends at the national level.
For vacations, they enjoy spending time in Puerto Vallarta, the Mexican resort city on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It is a popular resort destination with beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and rich history.
Larry Christman is also an accomplished musician, playing the guitar. He is a member of the string band for the Rajah Shriners and serves as the president of the Rajah Shrine String Band. He said he enjoys the musical outings, especially the local Halloween parades.
When asked for any thoughts they would share with a young person seeking to develop a successful salon, all three explained it is important to practice and hone one’s skills and to smoothly use your hands to create a positive experience for the client while providing a great haircut. Developing and projecting a sense of appreciation to your customers creates a bond to transform them into loyal customers.
“Treat them well,” Larry Christman said.
It was noted a number of their clients give them holiday gifts and invite Larry and Jayne Christman to family birthday parties and other events.
You can sense the closeness of these three special people, their happiness with their chosen profession and the satisfaction of all the friends they made throughout many decades.
Reportedly, Confucius said something like, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Larry Christman’s life and professional experience appear emblematic of Confucius’ sentiments.
