recognized

Academic awards are bestowed each spring at Muhlenberg College’s annual Honors Convocation – a formal academic ceremony designed to honor and celebrate leadership and scholarly excellence and achievement in the college community.

This year’s convocation was held April 27 in Egner Chapel.

Local awardees include:

Allentown: Sofia Davvetas, who is studying physics, received the Novartis Endowed Science Scholars Program Award, given to a junior or senior science major who has achieved a 3.5 or higher grade point average in the major field of study and who has clearly indicated the intention to pursue post baccalaureate work in the sciences leading to an advanced degree. She is a graduate of Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School. Anastajia Erickson, who is studying English, received the Dr. Harold L. Stenger Jr. Fellowship for Graduate Study, awarded to the graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in literary studies as an undergraduate and who intends to pursue graduate school in literary studies. Geoffrey Levy, who is studying computer science, received the Dr. George A. Frounfelker Award, given to Muhlenberg College of Continuing Studies students for excellence in continuing education. Erickson and Levy are both graduates of Parkland High School.

Coplay: Kristen Saylor, who is studying biology, received the Doris E. Flamish Memorial Award, given to a student studying natural science courses who has the intent to becoming a veterinarian, or who has a love of animals and is exploring similar types of careers. She is a graduate of Parkland High School,

Fogelsville: Rachel Anderson, who is studying psychology, received the Phi Sigma Iota Award in Spanish, awarded to a senior who has done outstanding work in Spanish, in course work and in other activities.

Orefield: Anam Ali, who is studying biochemistry, received the Russell B. Everett Romance Language Award and the Louis J. Jacobs Premedical Prize. The Russell B. Everett Romance Language Award is given to a senior manifesting superior academic performance in at least one romance language and its literature. The Jacobs Premedical Prize is awarded to a senior student of any major with a concentration in the pre-medical discipline who has the highest cumulative grade point average, has been accepted into medical school with the intent of becoming a physician, and who exhibits good character as well as leadership and humanitarian values. Ali is a graduate of Parkland High School.

Schnecksville: Mary Powell, who is studying dance, received the Ann E. Wonsiewicz Scholars in Education Award, given to a graduating Master of Arts in Teaching student on the basis of their academic achievement and potential for teaching excellence. She is a graduate of Parkland High School.
