LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Zephs to EPC finals

There wasn’t a celebration for victory on Tuesday night for Whitehall’s volleyball team.

The Zephyrs took care of business in the EPC semifinals at Allen, sweeping Nazareth in three games to advance to Thursday’s championship against Emmaus and that’s where they always thought they would be.

Head coach George Cowitch was proud of what his team was able to accomplish against the Blue Eagles at full strength and now looks forward to playing in their fifth EPC title game at 6:05 p.m. Thursday back at Allen.

“I think the difference this year is that we’re so young,” said Cowitch. “We’re just a really good team and we spread the ball out more this year with four guys you have to defend, compared to last year where you only had to focus on two guys really.”

Whitehall (18-2) was in the league title last year, but fell to Parkland. Now they get a chance to battle against the best team all season in District 11 with the Green Hornets (17-1).

Emmaus defeated Whitehall in the EPC season opener in four games back in mid March, but this should a different story this time around.

“I think Emmaus gives us a matchup problem,” said Cowitch. “Emmaus two middles are really good and they have more experience there against us. We played them early in the season and we went to four and it should have went to five. I would love to see where we’re at against them this time around.”

A win on Thursday would give the program their second EPC title in school history and clinch the top-seed for next week’s District 11 3A tournament.

After beating Nazareth in convincing fashion on Tuesday, Cowitch knows Thursday’s showdown is the real test.

“We didn’t celebrate after we won because we expected that,” he said. “Thursday is going to be a different story.”
