Five win gold

The Northampton Konkrete Kids were awarded eight medals at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships on May 7 and 8 at Whitehall High School.

Gold medalists were Anne Beenders in triple jump (37-4.75), Olivia Hayes in pole vault (9-9), Victoria Phillips in long jump (17-2), Alexa Wiland (121), and Jeremiah Strowder in the 400 meter dash (49.72).

“I usually start off a little bit slower than everybody else, and they usually catch me on the second curve, so as I heard footsteps next to me, I was conserving my energy, and on the last stretch, I gave it my all, and I knew I was gonna be able to catch him,” said Strowder. “The lean saved me. It was really exciting because I was seeded second, and I wanted to prove everyone wrong.”

Wiland’s winning throw came on her second attempt in prelims.

“I was a bit concerned because I knew I was competing against some other really good girls, and it could go either way,” she said. “I was overjoyed. It definitely gives me a lot more confidence, knowing I have the potential to go this far. I ran faster than I normally do, and I think that helped me pull through, and I took longer strides.”

Fourth place medals were awarded to Strowder in triple jump (43-11), Phillips in triple jump (34-9.50), and Lucy Colyer in shot put (34-2.50).
