Volleyball ends regular season
Whitehall’s boys volleyball team ended its regular season undefeated at home with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15) win over Northampton on April 30.
Zephyr seniors Brandon Bird, Peter Tabarani, Raffy Paulino, Julian Saba, and Jeremyah Cruz also celebrated senior night with a pre-game ceremony and significant contributions toward the victory.
“It was a fun game,” said Tabarani, who scored the last point of the night. “Obviously, this is my last regular season game ever, so I’m happy to be able to experience it. On the last point, I was like, let’s just make it look nice, so I wanted to run that one on purpose.”
In the last set alone, Saba had an ace, Cruz had an excellent game in the front row, and Paulino made a great save that led to a Tabarani kill.
“I think I had a big improvement from last year, and I think the whole entire team is more connected versus last year, and it’s fun,” Tabarani said. “It’s my last season, so I want to make the most of it.”
Bird, the team leader who set new school records this year, had 17 digs on the night.
The Zephyrs won their last four matches against Pocono Mountain West, Wilkes-Barre, Nazareth, and Northampton with all five seniors in the rotation.
“Primarily, two guys were playing as seniors, and then we had an illness and we acquired all our seniors to play the last four matches,” said Whitehall coach George Cowitch. “They work hard at practice, it didn’t bother them that they weren’t getting as much playing time, and when we put them in, they did the job. That’s all you can ask from them.”
Having received a bye for the first round of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament, Cowitch is happy to have the extra time.
“In this scenario, yes, because we’re missing a guy, and it lets some of our guys get healthy, so that’s a good thing for us,” he said.
