FHS, LHS set for showdown
The EPC tournament gets underway this Thursday, but the intrigue for league seedings will come down to Tuesday’s regular season finale.
None of those matchups will be more important than Liberty’s home showdown against rival Freedom to help determine the top-seed heading into the league tournament.
The Hurricanes (15-4, 13-2) and Pates (15-4, 12-3) hold the keys to the top spot, as a Liberty win would clinch the spot, but a Freedom victory could possibly put them in a three-way tie with Parkland (13-5, 12-3) atop the conference.
“If we lose to Freedom, we would be tied and I think they win the division,” said Liberty head coach Andy Pitsilos. “So we need to make a decision on how we go after the Freedom game Tuesday with a looming playoff game Thursday.”
Liberty defeated Freedom on April 15 in a 2-1 duel and look for the season sweep against the Pates, who have won four straight games heading into Tuesday’s encounter.
The ‘Canes avenged an earlier season loss to Nazareth by knocking off the Blue Eagles 4-3 last week to give the ‘Canes some momentum heading into the week.
“Nazareth is a good team who can beat anyone,” Pitsilos said. “We are hoping we are peaking at the right time but so much is going to come down to pitching matchups.”
The top eight teams for the league playoffs have clinched, but the seeding race is still up in the air.
Outside of the big three teams, Stroudsburg (13-5, 12-4), Central Catholic (13-6, 11-5), Whitehall (14-5, 11-5), Nazareth (14-5, 11-5) and Pocono Mountain East (13-6, 10-5) are locked into the league tourney.
